American Psycho had a rather different tone to it than what I expected. I'd only seen a single scene from American Psycho and it was the famous scene where Bateman is chasing a girl naked with a chainsaw. I knew it wouldn't be my typical slasher film, but as soon as the film begun my theories on the film were spun on their head as I discovered the film was much different to what I thought it to be. The film was really fun and goofy, but I figured it to be a serious slasher flick. At first I was taken abrupt by this, but as the film went on it actually grew on me and I was enjoyed the goofy take on this genre.
Christian Bale gives the most outrageous performance in his career. I've seen him in a lot of films that standout and are out of the ordinary, but his performance in this is by far the craziest, most outrageous of the lot. His character is so weird and wild and in one instance he reminded me of Jim Carrey if he secretly murdered people. It was just a brilliant performance.
The film features an unpredictable ending that will be hard to forget. I never full predicted the ending although I was on my way to predict what was going to happen. There are little clues spread throughout the film, especially in the dialogue, that hint at the ending and it really got my mind thinking, but half of these clues I wasn't aware were clues until the shocking and unforgettable ending.
The film actually featured much more sex than it did violence which was very much to my surprise. The film received an R18+ classification which if you are not aware is the highest classification in Australia and so naturally I presumed this would mean that there was plenty of graphic and grizzly violence like other horrors of the same classification, but I was wrong. There's actually a fair amount of explicit sexual content and nudity which I was very surprised by. The violence was intense, yes, but it was never as bad as I predicted it to be.
To sum up American Psycho features a goofy and fun tonne, an outrageous performance from Christian Bale and an absolutely unforgettable ending. It also surprised me that the film was much more sexual than violent.
